Learning outcomes
The Master of Arts FHNW in Music Education programme focuses on developing an individual artistic profile and teaching music at secondary schools. The programme aims to provide students with an in-depth understanding of music and to promote personal and independent artistic development. Students also acquire pedagogical and didactic skills as a second focus. The Music Secondary Education II programme prepares prospective teachers to competently fulfil the mission of general secondary schools as music specialists.
The Teaching qualification is obtained in a subsequent course at the FHNW School of Education.
Career prospects
Music is present in everyone's everyday life. Music teachers have a high level of musical competence and the ability to actively participate in musical life. They are open and curious about a wide variety of musical styles and forms of expression and incorporate this into their teaching. Active music-making together is an important part of teaching. As a music teacher, you have the desire to shape, listen to and analyse musical processes with your students. You help them to deepen their musical experiences and recognise and encourage musical talent.
You have the ability to understand music in a broader context and thus teach students to approach music in a differentiated way. Recognising similarities and points of contact between music and other areas of life enables you to design diverse and interdisciplinary lessons. You are familiar with new music technologies and their application in the classroom. You have a good command of the basics of studio technology, are familiar with common music software and are therefore able to support students in using it. You actively participate in shaping the cultural life of a school (performances, musical accompaniment for events). As a music teacher, you are the point of contact for musical matters at the school.
Target audience
This course is aimed at prospective teachers at Swiss upper secondary schools who wish to study music at a music academy in order to gain pedagogical skills alongside artistic and specialist knowledge.
Please remark: German Level C1 is required, the teaching language is German.
